 FAQ about Clay Pipe Brewing

These are the most frequently asked questions with their answers:
Keywords:

Q: Do you have a restaurant or bar attached to Clay Pipe Brewing Co.?

A: Clay Pipe Brewing Company is strictly a brewery. Our sole focus is on the beers we create. We believe that embracing our brewing needs without wasting valuable brain cells planning Karioke nights, or fixing a fryalator give us a quality edge in the market. We understand that our beers pair well with many foods, but our philosophy will always be to leave the cooking up to the restaurant experts and we'll be the beer experts.

Q: What is Ale? What is Lager?

A: Ale is a subtype of beer which uses a yeast that tends to float during the fermenting process hence it is refered to as "top fermenting yeast". Historically, these beer are produced in 12 to 16 days. Stylistically, ales are generally heavier bodied, less carbonated, and more agressively hopped than lager beers(bottom fermenters). At Clay Pipe Brewing, we use an ale yeast to obtain the rich flavor profile we seek, yet we age the beer much like a lager for three weeks or more. Our entire process lasts a minimum of 28 days, which is double the time of most ales! It is this extended aging which sets our beers apart, giving them a rare drinkability that is not normally associated with craft-brewed ales.

Q: Who manufactured your brewing equipment?

A: Our system has been put together ourselves. The brewhouse and most of the fermentation tanks were products of the Pub Brewing Company, Mahwah,NJ. The fact that Gregg Norris had worked for Pub and understood the ease with which they operated and went together, made the equipment selection a no brainer. The balance of the tanks were made by the now defunct Bruce Brewing Co. out of Denver. When asked if he's happy with the stuff Norris answered, "Hey it's a brewery. Most of the time it runs and once in a while it breaks. As far as this one is concerned, no complaints here. It makes world class beer."
